Dana Roman
graphite and mixed media drawings
“I like the rocks and views from the top…”
In her art, Dana prefers to express emotions rather than things…
Her work also found at the Art In Nature walk along the Bow River in Banff from 1 July to 30 September, 2024.
Dana spends much of her time in the mountains, skiing, hiking, scrambling, backpacking, and occasionally climbing. The overwhelming beauty of the mountains inspires her art, whether abstract, semi-abstract, or realistic. She believes her paintings should be viewed as visual poetry and affect our senses and emotions.
Dana’s latest pieces are the black and white drawings of her beloved mountains. She is drawing them with many important details, using her own photographs and fast sketches.

Dana has a master’s degree in architecture from Prague, Czech Republic. She worked for ten years in architectural firms in Prague and Toronto before switching to art.
Dana spent 20 years (1977-1997) running her textile art workshop, specializing in hand-painted silk; her collections were sold extensively in the wholesale marketplace.
Since moving to Canmore in 1997, she has been a studio artist, working in acrylics, mixed media and textiles. She took art courses at the Ontario College of Art, Alberta College of Art, and the Vancouver Island School of Art, she went on a textile tour of Japan, and attended many textile conferences with the Surface Design Association.
Dana has won many awards for her art locally, nationally, and internationally. One of the local public art awards is the triptych which hangs in the Canmore Town Hall at the Council Chamber. She is known as an enthusiastic volunteer, the past president of the Canmore Art Guild, and a few times CAG Gallery Director. She served on juries in Alberta for multiple public art competitions. In 2011, Dana was the recipient of the Canmore Mayor’s Spotlight on the Arts Award.
