Appraiser’s qualifications

Susan Sax-Willock has provided professional appraisal services for over twenty (20) years. She co-founded and operates a commercial art gallery, since 1998, dealing with contemporary and historical Canadian works of all media.  As well as representing close to forty (40) contemporary Western Canadian artists, the gallery is the primary representative for several artist estates, as well as dealing with secondary market artworks from private collections.  She is the principal partner involved with the valuation and pricing of works within the gallery.

She obtained a Master of Arts in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture and a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Art History from the University of Alberta. She taught Art History (including Canadian Art History) at the University of Alberta and Augustana University and was the Founding Executive Director for the Provincial Arts Service Organization: Visual Arts Alberta.  Prior to this she was a gallery-assistant and researcher for several commercial and public galleries.

Typically, appraisal projects are completed remotely utilizing digital images (jpgs) and background information provided by each institution or client and involve both individual works, small collections, as well as multi-work and multi-artist collections.  The appraiser does site-visits as required.

• Artist first and last name
• Title
• Date of work
• Media (oil, watercolour, etc. / support, paper, canvas, etc.)
• Size (image or canvas size, do not include the frame)
• Marks (signed, titled, etc.)
• Condition (scratches, fading, etc.)
• Provenance (who has owned it, where did you get it from, any pertinent labels on the back, etc.)

Provide images (front & back) of the work in jpg format.

Written appraisal fee.

$200 / hour.
