| Frank Karl Vervoort was born in Antwerp, Belgium in
1930. His family moved to Magrath, Alberta in 1948. Frank
worked for a printing company and as a window dresser for Eaton Department
Store in Lethbridge, Alberta in the mid to late 1950s. In 1960 he
enrolled in the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (now the Alberta
College of Art and Design). After graduation in 1964 with a
four-year diploma in painting he attended the Instituto Allende in San
Miguel, Mexico and the Nationaal Hoger Instituut en Koninklijke Academic
Voor Schone Kunsten (National Higher Institute, Royal Academy for
Classical Art) in Antwerp, Belgium. Frank began his teaching career
on his return to Calgary in 1966. After teaching children's art
classes in affiliation with the Allied Arts Centre, he joined the faculty
at the Alberta College of Art (ACA). He continued teaching at ACA
until his untimely death in 1983.
Frank was an active member of the Alberta Society of
Artists. Once he was on faculty at the Alberta College of Art, he
spent a great deal of his time camping, sketching, and painting in the
foothills of Southern Alberta, and in the mountains of British Columbia
and Alberta.
The works in our gallery are from a private collection,
purchased from Frank early in his career.

Artist Statement
Trees and shrubs become swift brush strokes of various
hues of yellow, green, and ochre.
Hill and rock formations are rendered as a series of interlocking shapes
and tones.
Buildings and houses are but a few broad paint strokes of light and dark.
Good solid darks serve as a background for lighter and brighter shapes and
textures.
The elements of landscape and picture making are interwoven to create a
flat tapestry of directness.
Those who have attempted to paint outdoors and directly from nature are
aware of the pitfalls and obstacles that are encountered. Light is
constantly changing, temperatures fluctuate, wind causes movement, and the
eye takes in much more than the canvas will hold. The outdoor artist
must devise a way of seeing. In his mind he has to eliminate all
those aspects of the landscape which will have no meaning in relation to
the painting. He has to be aware of patterns, of texture, of tone
and color, the relationship of shapes. Perspective often has to be
minimized. To achieve clarity, he must simplify, reorganize, and
exaggerate various aspects of his subject. Detail must become an
intricate part of the overall.
