Michael Sproule continues to return to western Canada to explore the western plains, foothills and mountains, where he has found land formations whose complex geology intrigues and inspires him. In his dramatic, colorful paintings, Michael offers us evidence of cataclysmic upheavals, of erosion, of grandeur, and of deposition. His interest in the geological phenomena behind the changing landscape provides the underlying structure for Michael’s work, whether that is the surge of a glacial outwash, the flow of a prairie river or mountain foothill, or the up thrust of ancient cliffs and peaks in the Rocky Mountains.
Michael has made a significant contribution to Canadian landscape painting for many years and this work shows a mature artist at the peak of his powers. Four of his paintings are part of the Canadiana Fund and have been chosen for four official residences: the Prime Minister's residences at 24 Sussex and Harrington Lake, Stornaway House, and Rideau Hall. |
