Robin Hopper RCA, OC

1939 - 2017

Robin Hopper, ceramist, potter, teacher (born 1939 in Selsdon, Surrey, England). For over a half century, Robin Hopper has been one of Canada’s leading artists and advocates of functional clay. He is a master craftsman.

Robin’s lifelong interest and research into ceramic glaze and colour development is the foundation on which he builds his work. His ideas are sourced from ceramic history, geology, world cultures, landscape, gardens, plants and painting. He makes use of a wide variety of different and unusual decorative processes and fires his works in a number of ways in different kilns. Robin Hopper was the first recipient of the Saidye Bronfman Award in 1977. His work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Gardiner Museum, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and many other institutions.

Robin Hopper passed away on the 6th of April 2017.
